The end of January fast approaches.
The coming week sees Candlemas on 2nd February. Candlemas commemorates the ritual purification of Mary forty days after the birth of Jesus. We also remember the Presentation of Jesus in the Temple. In pre–Christian times, this day was known as the ‘Feast of Lights’ and celebrated the increased strength of the life-giving sun as winter gave way to spring. Ancient festivals marked the midpoint of winter between the shortest day and the spring equinox.
2nd February was the day of the year when all the candles that were used in church during the year were brought in to church and a blessing was said over them, so it became the ‘Mass ‘of the candles. For Christians it helps to remind us that Jesus is ‘The Light of the World’
Last week we enjoyed the PP1 Christingle assembly which focussed on ‘Jesus the Light of the World’, you can see some images of the assembly on put Facebook page.
